FOR PARENTS

Clear information for families entering the program

Players may participate as members of MCYSO or as independent academy participants.

U11 and U12 players may continue in skills classes and recreational teams if they do not want to play competitively with Mission City Runners.

Skills classes are offered for all age groups.

Training is age-specific and grouped by developmental stage.

Program structure follows the applicable small-sided standards, playing formats, and developmental principles used by U.S. Soccer, South Texas Youth Soccer, and AAYSA youth academy environments.

Why youth soccer matters beyond the ball

Great youth academy programs do more than teach soccer technique. They support movement literacy, coordination, confidence, physical activity, game intelligence, social development, and long-term athletic habits.

More touches. More decisions. More confidence.

More Ball Contact

Fewer players means each child is involved more often, which increases repetition and confidence on the ball.

Better Decisions

Smaller games create more moments to pass, dribble, react, and solve problems in real time.

Age-Appropriate Complexity

The game grows step by step so players learn space, shape, and teamwork without being overwhelmed too early.

Why soccer is powerful for young players

Youth sports participation is associated with physical skill development, social growth, teamwork, responsibility, sportsmanship, and emotional development. Play-based activity also supports cognitive, physical, social, and emotional health.

Why coordination and movement quality matter

Research and youth training guidance support supervised development of balance, coordination, body control, jumping, landing, and strength foundations. These qualities help young players move better, learn better, and reduce avoidable movement errors.

Why small-sided formats matter

Smaller numbers and smaller fields increase touches, decision-making opportunities, and engagement, which is why younger ages play 4v4 first and then progress into 7v7 and 9v9 environments as they grow.

Why soccer connects to overall development

Soccer combines technical skill, visual tracking, spatial awareness, decision-making, reaction, teamwork, and physical activity in one environment. It connects movement, thinking, confidence, and social development at the same time.
