About San Antonio Runners Soccer Club

San Antonio Runners Soccer Club was founded in 2018 by players from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Men’s Soccer Club who wanted to continue competing at a higher level beyond the collegiate club environment. At the time, San Antonio did not have NCAA Division I men’s soccer, and the Runners emerged to help fill that competitive gap while providing a pathway for serious players in the region.

What began as a small, driven group of players quickly grew into a structured club focused on discipline, professionalism, and player development. As the organization expanded, the team moved beyond the campus environment to build an independent program capable of supporting broader competitive ambitions.

In 2022, San Antonio Runners expanded the club by launching a women’s program and joining the United Women’s Soccer, creating a competitive platform for female players in San Antonio and the surrounding region. The team quickly established itself as a strong program while building a pathway for women to continue competing at a high level beyond youth and collegiate soccer.

In 2024, the program expanded further by joining both the Women’s Premier Soccer League and the United Premier Soccer League women’s divisions. During that season, the Runners women made an immediate impact by winning the UPSL Women’s South Division, marking an important milestone in the club’s continued growth and competitiveness within the national semi-professional landscape.

In 2024, San Antonio Runners absorbed Mission City Youth Soccer Organization (MCYSO) to establish a competitive youth club within a broader development structure that connects recreational, academy, and select programs directly to the SA Runners semi-professional teams. This integration strengthened the club’s ability to develop players locally while providing a clear pathway for long-term progression within one unified system.

The structure now operates within the larger Mission City framework, which includes Mission City Soccer Complex, Mission City Adult Soccer Organization leagues and the MCYSO youth leagues. Together, these organizations form a complete player development pipeline that allows athletes to begin in recreational youth soccer, progress through competitive academy and select environments, and ultimately compete at the semi-professional level with San Antonio Runners.

Club Philosophy

San Antonio Runners develops multidimensional players through a multidisciplinary training environment that builds technical ability, tactical intelligence, physical performance, and strong character. We cultivate a challenging environment that builds character, leadership, and professionalism while preparing players to succeed at higher levels of the game.

Our coaching model uses the global numbering system for positions and formations so players understand the responsibilities of every role and how each position contributes to the team structure.

Our style of play is built on high pressure, quick passing, and fast ball movement. Players are encouraged to be technical, creative, and confident while maintaining discipline within the team system.

Clear team objectives and individual goals guide development each season, creating a culture where players support one another and grow together as competitors and leaders.

Club Methodology

San Antonio Runners operates under a unified club methodology designed to develop intelligent, adaptable players capable of succeeding in any professional system in the world. Our approach combines a structured curriculum with a demanding training environment that prioritizes speed, technical quality, tactical understanding, and character development.

Each age group is led by Master Coaches responsible for maintaining development standards and implementing the club’s coaching curriculum. This curriculum outlines the technical, tactical, physical, and mental priorities appropriate for each stage of development while ensuring a consistent learning environment across all teams.

Coaches are encouraged to bring their own leadership and personality to the training environment while still delivering the core principles of the club curriculum. While every team and player develops at a different rate, the underlying concepts and methodology remain consistent throughout the organization.

Our methodology produces interchangeable players who understand the global numbering system and positional responsibilities, allowing them to adapt to different formations and tactical systems anywhere in the world. Training sessions are conducted at a high tempo with an emphasis on speed, quick decision-making, and fast ball movement, reflecting the modern demands of the game.

San Antonio Runners works with the players and resources available to us, building an environment where commitment, discipline, and effort determine progress. We believe that any player can achieve their goals if they are willing to put in the work required to reach them.

Our club is committed to providing opportunity for all players. We do not discriminate based on ethnic background, financial circumstances, or personal background. Hard work, discipline, and commitment are the standards that guide development within our program.
